Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search: What They Mean for Your Business Website

AI Overviews and ChatGPT search – what they mean for your website

Short answer: AI answers on Google and in ChatGPT mean fewer people click through for simple questions. But people still click when they’re ready to buy, compare options or contact someone. For a small business, the fix is not a special “AI trick”: it’s clear, specific pages, a complete Google Business Profile, real reviews and content that shows your experience.

What’s actually happening

Google AI Overviews show an AI-written summary at the top of many search results, with links to the sources it used. AI Mode goes further, with a conversation-style search. Outside Google, many people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity questions like “best web developer for a small clinic in India”.

How much traffic does it take away?

For informational searches, a lot. Ahrefs compared Google Search Console data for 300,000 keywords and found that when an AI Overview appears, the click-through rate of the top-ranking page was about 58% lower in December 2025 than it would otherwise be expected to be.

That hits pages that answer simple questions, like “what is a domain name”. It hurts much less for searches where people want to act: “website developer near me”, “Shopify store setup cost”, or your business name.

There’s an upside too. People who find a business through AI tools often arrive already convinced. They’ve read a summary, compared options and chosen you.

What Google says you need to do

Google’s own guidance for site owners is clear: there’s no special optimisation for AI Overviews or AI Mode. To be eligible, a page just needs to be indexed and allowed to show a snippet. Google recommends the same SEO basics as always:

  • Let Google crawl your site, and link your important pages from each other.
  • Give visitors a good page experience: fast, mobile-friendly, easy to read.
  • Keep important content in text, not just in images.
  • Use images and video that support the text.
  • Keep structured data consistent with what’s on the page.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date.

Google also says you don’t need special AI text files or new markup to appear.

What to do as a small business

1. Answer clearly, near the top

Start each important page with a direct answer: what you do, for whom, where, how much and how long. AI summaries pick up clear statements more easily than vague marketing lines.

2. Be specific

“We build websites” says nothing. “Business websites from ₹6,000, live in 2–3 weeks, with WhatsApp enquiry buttons” gives both people and AI something to quote.

3. Show real experience

Case studies with real numbers, photos of your work, your process and honest opinions. This is the content AI can’t copy from elsewhere.

4. Keep your business details consistent everywhere

Same name, phone number and services on your website, Google Business Profile, directories like Justdial, Clutch or IndiaMART, and social profiles. AI tools pull from many sources and trust consistent ones.

5. Collect reviews

Reviews are one of the strongest signals for local results, and AI tools often mention how a business is reviewed.

6. Focus on searches where people act

Write pages for services, prices, locations and comparisons, not just general definitions that AI will summarise without sending a click.

7. Track the right numbers

Traffic may drop while enquiries hold steady. Measure calls, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions, not just visits.

FAQ

Do I need special code or files to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says pages only need to be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Normal SEO best practices apply, and no special AI files or markup are required.

Can I stop Google from using my content in AI Overviews?

You can limit what appears using snippet controls like nosnippet or max-snippet, but that also limits how your page shows in normal results.

How do I get recommended by ChatGPT?

There's no form to fill in. Have a clear website, consistent business listings, good reviews and mentions on trusted sites. AI tools draw on what's published about you.

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. Searches where people want to buy, book or contact a business still lead to clicks, and AI tools rely on well-structured websites to answer at all.
