Does a Small Business Still Need a Website in 2026?
Short answer: Most small businesses still need a website, but not a big one. Instagram, WhatsApp and Google Maps help people discover you; a website is where they check you’re real, understand your services and prices, and contact you. It’s also the only online presence you fully own. A simple 3–5 page site is enough for many businesses.
With so many customers finding businesses on Instagram or Google Maps, it’s a fair question. Here’s an honest look at when a website matters and when you can wait.
What social media and Google Maps do well
- Instagram and Facebook: show your work, build a following, run ads.
- WhatsApp Business: quick conversations, catalogues and order updates.
- Google Business Profile: appear in local searches and on Maps, collect reviews.
These are free or cheap, and every local business should use at least Google Business Profile.
What only a website does
1. You own it. Social platforms change rules, reach and algorithms, and accounts can be restricted. Your website and domain stay yours.
2. It answers detailed questions. Services, prices, process, FAQs, areas served. A Maps listing or Instagram bio can’t hold that.
3. It ranks for more searches. Your Google profile shows up for local searches. A website with a page for each service can rank for many more, like “teeth whitening cost” or “Shopify store setup”.
4. It builds trust. Many people check for a website before calling, especially for bigger purchases. No website can look like a business that isn’t established.
5. AI tools read it. When people ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI for recommendations, those tools draw on websites. A clear website gives them something to say about you. More in AI Overviews and ChatGPT search.
6. It works with ads. If you run Google or Meta ads, a dedicated page usually converts better than sending people to a profile.
When you can skip it, for now
- You’re testing an idea and selling only to people you know.
- You have more work than you can handle from referrals.
- Your customers only ever book through a marketplace that handles everything.
Even then, register your business name as a domain so nobody else takes it.
What a “small” website should include
You don’t need 30 pages. Start with:
- Home: what you do, for whom, where, and a clear contact button
- Services: what you offer, with starting prices if you can
- About: why you, with real photos
- Work or reviews: proof that you deliver
- Contact: phone, WhatsApp, form and location
Add a blog later if you want to rank for more searches.

FAQ
Is an Instagram page enough for a small business?+
It's great for showing your work, but you don't own it, and it can't rank on Google for your services. Use both, linked to each other.
Is Google Business Profile better than a website?+
They do different jobs. The profile gets you found locally; the website explains your services and builds trust. Most businesses need both.
How many pages does a small business website need?+
Five is enough to start: Home, Services, About, Work or Reviews, and Contact.
Can I make my own website?+
Yes, with a website builder. It costs less money but more time, and getting speed, SEO and mobile layout right is harder than it looks.
