How Much Does It Cost to Build a Shopify Store in India?

Short answer: A small Shopify store in India typically costs ₹42,000–₹65,000 in the first year: about ₹21,000 for a year of the Basic plan including GST, ₹20,000 or more for professional setup, plus a domain and a few apps. After that, you pay the plan, apps and a small fee on every online order.

Shopify’s monthly price is only part of the bill. Here’s every cost, in rupees, so you can plan properly.

Prices are before 18% GST. Most small stores start on Basic and move up when online sales grow, because a higher plan lowers the per-order fee.

2. Transaction fees on every online order

Shopify Payments isn’t available in India, so you’ll use a gateway like Razorpay, PayU or Cashfree. Two fees apply to each prepaid order:

• The gateway’s fee: Razorpay’s standard plan charges 2% plus 18% GST (2.36% in total).
• Shopify’s fee: 2%, 1% or 0.6% depending on your plan.

On Basic, that’s about 4.36% of each prepaid order. On a ₹1,000 order, roughly ₹43.60. Cash on delivery orders don’t attract Shopify’s fee, although COD has its own costs in returns and courier charges.

3. Theme

Shopify offers free themes that work well for many stores. Premium themes are a one-time purchase. A developer can customise either to match your brand, or build a custom theme if you need a unique design.

4. Apps

Apps add features like reviews, WhatsApp alerts, GST invoices and COD rules. Many have free plans, and paid ones usually bill monthly in US dollars. A small store can often run on 3–5 apps. Tip: a good developer can build small features, like a size chart or sticky add-to-cart, into the theme instead of paying for an app every month.

5. Domain

A .com or .in domain usually costs a few hundred to around a thousand rupees a year. You can buy it from any registrar and connect it to Shopify.

6. Setup and design

You can set up a store yourself, but most businesses hire help to get payments, shipping, GST and design right. Typical ranges:

How to keep Shopify costs low

• Pay yearly for the plan instead of monthly.
• Install only the apps you need. Remove trial apps you don’t use; they also slow the store down.
• Encourage prepaid orders with a small discount, to reduce COD returns.
• Move up a plan when it pays for itself. When your monthly online sales are high enough that the per-order fee saving covers the higher plan, upgrade.
