How to Rank Higher on Google Maps: A Guide for Local Businesses

How to rank higher on Google Maps

Short answer: Google ranks businesses on Maps using three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). You can’t change distance, so focus on a complete, accurate Google Business Profile, the right categories, steady reviews, regular photos and posts, and a website that backs it all up.

Google also says plainly: there’s no way to pay for a better local ranking. It has to be earned.

How Google decides who shows first

According to Google’s own help page:

  • Relevance: how well your Business Profile matches what someone searched. Complete, detailed information helps Google understand you.
  • Distance: how far you are from the person searching, or from the location in their search.
  • Prominence: how well known your business is, based on things like reviews, ratings and links from other websites.

Step 1: Get the basics right

  • Verify your profile. Unverified profiles don’t show reliably. Setup guide: Google Business Profile step by step.
  • Use your real business name. No added keywords or city names.
  • Choose the most specific primary category, then add secondary categories for other services.
  • Keep hours, phone and address accurate, including holiday hours.

Step 2: Improve relevance

  • Fill in every field: services, products, attributes, service areas.
  • Write a clear description (up to 750 characters) of what you do and for whom.
  • List each service with a short description.
  • Make sure your website has a page for each main service, with your city or area mentioned naturally.
  • Keep your name, address and phone exactly the same on your website and directories like Justdial, IndiaMART or Sulekha.

Step 3: Build prominence

Reviews

Reviews matter for both ranking and clicks. Ask every happy customer, send them the direct review link, and reply to every review. A steady flow of genuine reviews beats a sudden burst. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them.

Photos and posts

Add real photos regularly: your shop, team at work, products, finished jobs. Post updates and offers every week or two. An active profile signals an active business.

Get listed in relevant local directories and industry associations, and get mentioned by local news or partner businesses. These links and mentions build prominence.

Step 4: Strengthen your website

Your website helps Google trust your profile:

  • Link your profile to your website, and add your address and phone on the site.
  • Add LocalBusiness schema with the same details.
  • Make sure the site is fast and works well on mobile.
  • Create location or service-area pages if you serve several areas, each with genuinely useful content.

Step 5: Track progress

In your Business Profile, check Performance: searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Track them monthly. Rankings move gradually, usually over weeks or months.

What doesn’t work

  • Keyword-stuffed business names
  • Fake addresses or virtual offices
  • Fake reviews
  • Several profiles for the same business

These can get your profile suspended.

FAQ

How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps?

Small improvements can show within a few weeks; competitive areas usually take a few months of steady work on reviews, content and profile activity.

Does the number of reviews affect Google Maps ranking?

Yes. Google lists review count and rating among the signals of prominence.

Can I rank in a city where I don't have an office?

Distance matters, so it's hard to rank on Maps far from your location. Service-area pages on your website can help you appear in normal search results for those areas.

Can I pay Google for a better Maps ranking?

No. You can run Local Services or search ads, which are labelled as ads, but organic Maps ranking can't be bought.
